Celebrating Mike Muirhead’s Retirement and Years of Service

Mike Muirhead officially retired from the City of Garden City on July 31, closing an extraordinary career of service, leadership, and dedication to public power.

As Director of Public Utilities, Mike played a vital role in shaping the city’s utility operations and long-term energy strategy. Throughout his career, he was a strong advocate for public power and an invaluable supporter of KMEA. His commitment to advancing reliable, affordable energy solutions benefited not only Garden City but communities across Kansas.

Mike’s impact on KMEA has been significant. He served on the KMEA Executive Committee for more than 14 years, including seven years as President, three years as Vice President, and two years as Secretary-Treasurer.

One of Mike’s most notable accomplishments was his leadership and vision in helping Garden City move to KMEA as their power supplier and as a result of that, develop the Jameson Energy Center. Working closely with KMEA and other partners, he helped guide the project from concept to reality, creating a valuable energy resource that continues to serve the community today.

In recognition of his many contributions, the City of Garden City recently hosted a retirement celebration honoring Mike’s outstanding career and lasting legacy. Colleagues, friends, and community members gathered to thank him for his years of service and to celebrate the impact he has had on the city, KMEA, and the public power industry.
