Baldwin City begins new substation project

August 5, 2025/in General Information/by KMEA

In response to continued growth and rising energy demands, Baldwin City has begun the addition of a second electrical substation to bolster the community’s power infrastructure. The new facility aims to provide reliable service to expanding neighborhoods in the northern and eastern parts of town.

Currently, the city’s existing substation—located on the southern end—is nearing its capacity limits.

The new substation will feature a 20 MVA transformer, positioned strategically to better serve the growing areas while also offering redundancy for the southern substation that is nearing capacity. With this upgrade the city estimates that this will provide sufficient capacity and resiliency for many years to come.

Construction began with the foundations on July 7th, with the substation projected to be operational by mid-2026.
