We are pleased to announce Gus Collins, Director of Utilities for the City of Winfield as the recipient of the 2020/2021 Ron Huxman Distinguished Service Award. In 2016, KMGA established this award in honor of Ron Huxman. Ron played a leading role in the day-to-day activities of the agency, as well as serving as President, Executive Committee member and Joint Board member. The award honors his contributions to KMGA and is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and devoted service to both KMGA and to the Municipal Natural Gas Industry.
Gus has served as Director of Utilities for the City of Winfield since August 2014, overseeing the city’s Water, Wastewater, Wastewater Treatment, Water Treatment, Gas Distribution, Electric Distribution & Electric Production utilities. Prior to joining the City of Winfield, Gus served as City Manager for Wellington, KS, City Clerk Finance Director, Assistant City Manager, and City Manager for El Dorado, KS, and Assistant to City Clerk for Emporia, KS.
With over 35 years of local government experience, Gus has been involved with and served in leadership roles for several organizations including KMGA, KMEA, KPP, KMU, & more. Gus has served on the KMGA Executive Committee for 7 years and was appointed President in May of 2020. He is serves as the Chair of the KMEA/KMGA Joint Board for Administration. Anytime there is an opportunity to lead or fill in he is there! Gus and other staff members worked diligently throughout the recent flood events organizing, providing man hours, and making critical decisions. His Water/Wastewater crews teamed with the Street Department day after day to prepare the fairgrounds for the Annual County Fair.
A native of Emporia, KS, Gus received his bachelor’s degree from Emporia State University. Gus enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting, sports, and spending time with family.
