City of Washington is Hiring Power Plant Operator

The City of Washington, Kansas, is accepting applications for Power Plant Operator. The applicant must possess a valid Kansas Class B CDL and HS Diploma/GED.  Knowledge in diesel engine operation, power generation and maintenance, along with a skilled level of working in the operation of fossil fueled engines, electric generators, and all associated equipment is required for this position.

City of Moundridge Substation Project

As the City of Moundridge looked at options for electrical supply, because their contract was coming to an end, they decided their best option would be to build a new 115 kV line from the Westar (now Evergy) substation located SW to a new substation located in the southern portion of the City.

One Year Later, Day of Celebration!

July 1st marked the one-year anniversary of the acquisition of Mid-States Energy Works and it is a day of celebration! Despite the pandemic, leaders of both organizations were able to gather together at Mid-States shop in Salina to sign the documents and close on the purchase. KMEA staff, Mid-States staff, KMEA Executive Committee and others were there to celebrate the start of a strategic merger of the two entities with the goal and hopes to bring value to our KMEA membership.

BPU Kansas City Board of Public Utilities General Manager Receives Leadership and Managerial Excellence Award

(KANSAS CITY, Kan.) — William (Bill) Johnson, general manager of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities in Kansas, received the Mark Crisson Leadership and Managerial Excellence Award during the American Public Power Association’s National Conference in Orlando, Florida.
The award recognizes managers at a utility, joint action agency, or state or regional association who steer their organizations to new levels of excellence, lead by example, and inspire staff to do better.

City of Arma Substation Work Begins!

The construction of the new substation for the City of Arma has begun.  In the photo, Mike Schmaderer, Director of Engineering and Field Services is discussing the process with a representative from Altitude Energy who has been contracted to complete the installation of the structure.

Bob Mills Honored for 37 Years of City Service on May 27th

Bob Mills, Director of Electric Production, is retiring after 37 years of service with the City of Garnett.  A special reception will be held in his honor on Thursday, May 27th, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. at the Garnett Fire Station.  The public is invited to join the City staff during Thursday’s reception to thank Bob for his many years of dedicated service to the Garnett community.

In November of 1984, Bob began his career with the City as a Power Plant Operator.  He was promoted to Acting Assistant Superintendent of the Garnett Power Plant in 1989 and assumed the position of Acting Power Plant Superintendent in 1992.  In 1993, Bob was named Superintendent of the Power Plant.  After receiving his OSHA Certification in 2009, the title of Safety Director was added to his duties.  In March of 2015, Bob was promoted to Director of Electric Production.
